The new series of paintings by Peter Steinmann is informed by the city as a pattern, an organism that can only be steered in the short term. His paintings are like a palimpsest in their creation of a complex overlay that eternalizes contemporary conditions that meanwhile have become history.

Cities are primarily shaped by open spaces rather than buildings, defined by the immaterial rather than the material. The grid of New York sculpts the flow of the city, channels movement and traffic, creates points of density oscillating between presence and absence. The paintings of Steinmann read like the score of such an urban choreography.

The new color palette sets a counterpoint to the urban field and its lack of soil. The earthy tones, the matte finish of the painted surface recall clay, or even fertile grounds. However, they are left deserted opening a place for imagination.
