About the Pop Up

New York, NY, September 2017– New design studio, CASA BEYT HOME, launches its first pop up event & textile workshops in New York City – from September 19-24 – as a part of Li Edelkoort’s New York Textile Month.

Curated by Denise Maroney, a Rhode Island School of Design graduate and textiles artist, CASA BEYT HOME features objects for the home made by a collection of 16 artisans and designers from throughout the Middle East and Central America. Maroney met and worked with several of the featured artists during her travels across the two regions.

“I went from working in a surface design studio in Beirut, Lebanon to a textile mill in Guatemala and I was struck by the unexpected similarities between the two regions, in particular by the cultural signi cance of textile making,” says Maroney. “There is a deep resonance among these designers: they share a commitment to craftsmanship, a whimsical yet thoughtful perspective on their culture and heritage, and a grasp of the social impact design has on the local community.”

The name of the exhibit–a nod to the words for “home” in Spanish and Arabic– reflects Maroney’s desire to create a new type of home through intercultural dialogue. From Egyptian kilim rugs to alpaca pillows from Oaxaca, silk embroidered pillows from Lebanon to Guatemalan hand painted ceramic plates, the original designs reflect heritage, culture, and contemporary life from both regions.

“The artists use a mix of innovative and traditional techniques – mostly related to textiles, but also translat- ed into ceramics, metal, and recycled plastic – to create objects for the home that walk the line between art and design. They are weaving, embroidering, and painting a powerful story in each piece they produce.”

Visitors will also have the chance to take a piece (or two) of the artisanal pop-up home with them. A select number of objects are in fact made by refugee women living in Lebanon; all proceeds from the sale of their embroidery will go directly back to their textile co-ops and NGOs.

CASA BEYT HOME will also host two evening workshops for those curious about making textiles: Weaving in Central America, instructed by Audrey Ducas, a textile designer and artist working between Guatemala, France, and the USA; and Embroidery from the Middle East, led by Wafa Ghnaim, a Palestinian writer and artist.

CASA BEYT HOME has also been invited to Dubai this November for Dubai Design Week, and plans for a pop up in Mexico City are in the works for early 2018.

Initiated by Lidewij Edelkoort, the trend forecaster and Dean of Hybrid Studies at Parsons School of Design, New York Textile Month gathers all voices and expressions concerning fabrics, bringing together museums, galleries, showrooms, retailers, design studios, students, and the general public to discuss the importance of textiles. CASA BEYT HOME is proud to be a firrst time participant.
